They do love those cranes!

These pictures were recently taken. Parrots in my area seem to really like building on the boat cranes. While they are certainly stable enough, and apparently its height and criss-crossing of metal (not to mention the bucket) appeals to the birds, it also makes them highly visible, which I’m not crazy about.

Also – some of these are working cranes! On one of the more established nests (which thankfully sits on private property), man and bird have worked out a system. The crane is slowly lowered, the birds fly out, the crane is used, put back and the birds immediately return and rebuild. The first time this happened, the crane owner thought the parrots would be scared off, but since they seem determined to be there, the owner of the crane does not even bother at this point to totally disassemble the nest!

The system seems to work, as so far, the crane has apparently not been required while fledglings that can’t fly were still in the nest.
