I recently moved from Georgia to Illinois, and this morning, I was walking my dog, and heard what I thought were starlings. I never imagined that it could be wild parrots!!! I ran home and got my binoculars, got in my car and drove to where I had seen them. Oh, they were beautiful!!! I couldn't understand why they were so far north. I'd seen a few in Georgia, but never thought I'd see them in Illinois, and in late October! There were about 14-16 of them, and they were precious! What a wonderful morning this is! Hope to see more!.

I live close to the Great South Bay in Lindenhurst NY. Saturday (9/26/09) a flock of about 30 parrots landed in the tree in front of my house. I have never seen parrots down this way before. It was amazing! They squabbled for about 5 minutes and headed west.

I have seen the red headed parrots in the Jamaica part of Queens. They are about the same length as an Amazon parrot but a lot slimmer. They normally fly together in pairs or small flocks. Also, I am sure that they stay here for the winter, but I don't know where. I saw them in my friend's yard once in a small flock and a few times I have seen them fly overhead in pairs.

Saw a parrot on my windowsill on Roosevelt Island. Not a monk parrot, as this one had a bit of red on or just above its beak. Was tagged on the right leg. Could indicate that they are migrating west, toward the city.

The NYC legislation was indeed introduced on 3/24/09, Resolution No. 1872-2009. Now in the NYC Council Environmental Protection Committee for further consideration. Introduced in April and May in the NY State Senate and Assembly were bills to protect the wild Quaker parrots and change their status in the NYS Environmental Conservation Laws from unprotected to protected. The Bills are S4131 and A07688. These bills have been referred to the Senate and Assembly Environmental Conservation Committees.

Individuals, no matter where they are, are urged to write in support of the State legislation to: Sen. Joseph Addabbo, Jr., 159-53 102nd Street, Howard Beach, NY 11414, and to Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, 230 West 72nd Street, Suite 2F, New York, NY 10023. For the City of NY Resolution, write in support to: Hon. Tony Avella, 38-50 Bell Blvd., Suite C, Bayside, NY 11361, and to Hon. James F. Gennaro, 185-10 Union Turnpike, Fresh Meadows, NY 11366.

We have seen the red-headed parrots twice now at the NYSC in Oceanside. I tried to get info on them back in Nov when we first saw them on our roof and in the tree next to the club. I could not find any info then as all that were discussed on the web were the smaller, all green ones. They were back yesterday and were were all delighted! They are a flock of about 15 and are beautiful!
